Bio
Hello! My name is Marjorie Smith and I teach private voice and piano lessons to students of all ages in State College, PA. Originally from DuBois, PA, I began studying the piano at the age of 8 and began studying voice at the age of 16.
For my undergraduate degree, I attended Penn State University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a voice emphasis. During my time at Penn State, I was a member of the Women's Chorus, University Choir, Concert Choir and Essence of Joy. While at Penn State, I studied voice with Dr. Susan Boardman.
Before attending graduate school, I taught voice and piano lessons along with group music and voice at the Conservatory of Music and Dance in Eagleville and Harleysville, PA. During that time, I enjoyed working with voice and piano students of all ages and that experience inspired me to learn more and attend graduate school at the Westminster Choir College.
In May 2005, I received a Master of Music Degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from the Westminster Choir College of Rider University located in Princeton, NJ. I studied voice with Professor Marvin Keenze during my time at Westminster. For my graduate pedagogy project, I completed a study scientifically comparing the sound of a singer's voice to the sound of an instrument they have played. This study helped me understand the importance of all sounds to a singer's ear.
I am also a full member of NATS (The National Association of Teachers of Singing) and have participated as a judge in singing festivals. I have worked with students to prepare them for various situations ranging from school and church solos to theme park and college auditions. If you have specific goals in mind for taking voice and piano lessons please let me know and we will tailor your lessons to meet your goals.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about taking voice and piano lessons. My current teaching hours are Monday through Friday in the afternoons and evenings.
